Artist’s Statement- 2025
I am a visual explorer, continually engaged in the details of everything. I have attempted to capture these things through photography, but photo images only hold fleeting effects of light. My deepest grasp to capture everything on canvas is accomplished by painting both in my studio and outside. Controlled studio work can sometimes feel a bit sterile. Outside, called plein-air painting, an artist feels the light, the sudden cool wind and moisture or deepening cooled shadows caused by dense clouds. It evokes a personal and lasting understanding of natural phenomenon. Nature’s openness has always held me captive. Its energy and inspiration easily transcribes into plein-air and studio paintings.
I also am definitely a realist, with an ever-widening respect for The Impressionists. While I may feel a desire to convey every leaf and blade of grass, my objective remains to create for the viewer that same feeling I also experienced visually. An artist friend said once, “if you want a perfect picture, get a camera.” The essence of any scene is the feeling one takes home at the end of that day. That is what I wish to paint.
